Golf course design essentials

The design of a golf course has a certain degree of flexibility. Unlike its livestock sports venues, it does not have fixed and strict scale requirements, as long as it basically meets the requirements for the number of strokes per hole and the length of the fairway. Golf courses are generally chosen in areas with natural terrain. Therefore, an important principle of the design is to adapt measures to local conditions, make clever use of the original terrain for current planning, make full use of the original natural landscapes such as mausoleums, mountains, lakes, and woodlands, and combine it with the competition requirements of the Gower Stadium to minimize Earthwork volume, comprehensive planning and design. This not only saves investment, but also easily forms its own characteristics. The pursuit of individuality is a major feature of the golf course design. There are no two identical golf courses in the world. Each golf course department has conducted in-depth research on the creation of its own characteristics in order to attract more members.

1.Tee table design: Tee tables come in different shapes, with rectangle, curved surface, and oval being the most common ones. In addition, semicircles, circles, S shapes, L shapes, etc. are often used. -The general area is 30-150 square meters, and it is 0.3-1.0 meters higher than the surrounding area. To facilitate drainage and increase visibility for hitters, the surface is short, trimmed grass, requiring the lawn to have a smooth surface. Although the tee area is small, it is subject to heavy tracking, requiring surface water to be quickly drained. Considering the teeing angle, there should be a certain degree of topography, generally a slight slope of 1%-2%.

2. Fairway design: The north-south direction is the ideal fairway direction. The fairway is generally 90-550 meters long and 30-55 meters wide, with an average width of about 41 meters.

3.Green design A. The green is a key area of the Golf Course. Each green is unique in size, shape, contours and surrounding bunkers to create a wealth of challenge and interest. The height of the green lawn is required to be between 5.0-6.4 cm, and it should be uniform and smooth. B. Drainage of greens. Surface water on the green should drain from 2 or more directions. The topography of the green should be designed so that surface water drainage lines are away from the direction of human traffic. The slope of most parts of a green should not exceed 3% to ensure the direction of ball movement after hitting the ball.
c. Practice putting green. The practice green is a dedicated practice area for players learning golf to practice hitting holes. The practice green is usually located near the golf clubhouse and the first tee. It should be possible to set up 9-18 holes and their replacement positions. The green surface should have a certain slope. 3% is also appropriate. To ensure the quality of the practice putting green turf. A golf course should have 2 or more practice greens that are used in rotation.

4. Obstacle area: The obstacle area is generally composed of bunkers, pools, and trees. Its purpose is to punish players for inaccurate shots. It is much more difficult to get the ball out of the hazard area than to hit the ball on the fairway. A. sandpit. Sandpits generally cover an area of 140 to 38o square meters, and some sandpits can be as high as about 2,400 square meters. Nowadays, most 18-hole golf courses have 40-80 bunkers, which can be determined according to the playing needs and the designer’s design ideas. The setting of the bunkers on the golf course should be in line with the natural strategy, so that golfers can think of the correct location of the tee box. Usually the location of fairway bunkers is determined by the distance from the championship tee. The location of the bunker should also be based on the drainage characteristics of the site. The bunker should have good above-ground and underground drainage conditions. In areas with low terrain and sufficient underground drainage, or in areas with good water seepage conditions under sand pits.
Sandpits can be built below grass level. From a maintenance and management perspective. The bunker on the side of the green should be set 3-3.7 meters away from the green lawn to facilitate the passage of construction machinery and prevent the sand in the bunker from being blown onto the lawn by the wind. The sand thickness in the bunker at the base of the green should be at least The thickness of the slope or raised sand layer of the bunker should be at least 5cm; the sand thickness of the fairway bunker should be relatively shallow. The sand requirements for golf course bunkers are relatively strict. The particle size of more than 75% of the sand should be between o.25-0.5 mm (medium-grained sand).

5.Logo tree. Sign trees in golf courses are planted to enable golfers to calculate the location of the ball’s landing point when hitting the ball. They are often located 50, 100, 150, and 200 yards from the tee (1 yard = 0.9144 meters). You can plant a single big tree or small tree at 50 or 150 yards, or plant two big trees or small trees at 100 or 200 yards, so that the batsman can easily judge the distance of the ball landing.

6. Others. In addition to the above-mentioned aspects, golf course design generally also includes driving ranges, clubhouses, rest pavilions, etc., which can be flexibly designed according to specific needs. In terms of golf course area, 18 fairways are planned from land covering dozens of hectares. Generally, an 18-hole golf course consists of 4 short holes, 4 long holes and 10 medium holes. The par is 72. However, If there are differences in factors such as special terrain and land area, the par can be between 72 plus or minus 3 pars. In other words, an acceptable par for 18 holes is between 69 and 75. Under the guidance of designers who are good at planning, the functions of the entire 18 holes of the golf course are just enough to fully utilize the entire set of 14 clubs.
In addition, the distances for short, medium and long holes are stipulated as follows:
Short Holes – Par 3s, under 250 yards in length.
The middle hole is a Par 4, ranging from 251 to 470 yards in length.
Long Hole – Par 5 (Pars), 471 yards or more in length
